About the classic model

The classic model is the default character shape used in Minecraft. Both arms are 4 pixels wide, which means the right and left arm regions on the 64×64 atlas use a full 4×12 column for the front face. If you've been making skins for a long time, this is probably the layout you're used to. New skin packs and custom characters very often still target this model because of its compatibility and familiar proportions.

If you want to make a skin for the slimmer character shape instead, use the slim editor.

Things to try on a classic skin

Add a hat with the outer layer

Switch to the Outer layer in the sidebar and paint on the head's outer region. Hair, hats, and helmets all live on this layer.

Match arms with Mirror

Turn on Mirror to copy each pixel you draw on one arm to the opposite arm. It works the same way for the legs.

Start from an existing skin

Use Import PNG to load a 64×64 skin and continue editing it instead of starting from a blank template.
